Crate training is one of the most effective tools for housetraining a new puppy, and most puppies adjust quickly when it’s introduced the right way. Start by making the crate a positive place with soft bedding and a favorite toy, never as a form of punishment.

Begin with short periods inside the crate while you’re home, gradually increasing the time as your puppy gets comfortable. Feeding meals near or inside the crate can also help build a positive association.

Within a few weeks, most puppies come to see their crate as a safe, cozy den of their own, which makes overnight training and travel much easier down the road.
